Constructed on a landfill of 1 , 2 million m² on Guanabara Bay ,  it comprises a stretch of land from Santos Dumont Airport to the Morro da Viúva  ( Mount of the Widow )  in Botafogo .  The project ,  built between 1960 and 1964 ,  was coordinated by Maria Carlota  ( Lota )  Macedo Soares and created by the architects Affonso Eduardo Reidy and Roberto Burle Marx ,  who designed the gardens .  It is a National Historic Site since 07 - 28 - 1965 .    ( 2 )  Known just as Outeiro da Glória ,  the Brazilian Baroque Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro  ( The Church of Our Lady of Glory )  church was built between 1717 and 1739 .  It is octagonal in shape and its interior walls are covered with Portuguese azulejos  ( ornate handmade ceramic tile )  by Valentim de Almeida .  For its value as an example of baroque style and for its historical significance ,  the Outeiro has been declared a National Historic Site since 04 - 05 - 1938 .   Beside the church is the Museu Imperial da Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro  ( Imperial Museum of Our Lady of Glory )  built in 1939 .
